7 Ethiopian Women to Watch - an update

Going through our media archive, we came across an article that Elias Wondimu, our publisher, wrote on November 2012 about the many women who grace the pages of our book Flowers of Today, Seeds of Tomorrow and continue to inspire us all. In this article, “7 Ethiopian Women to Watch”, he writes:
“Ethiopia has a rich tradition of independent, intelligent women. From the Queen of Sheba to wedding gown designer Amsale Aberra, these women have helped shaped the cultural and historical trajectory of Ethiopia and beyond. The seven women on this list are members of an extraordinary generation of diasporan Ethiopians who are flourishing throughout the world, in large part thanks to the sacrifices and dedication of their parents. Many of them left Ethiopia during the political upheaval of the mid 1970′s. They have since found their places on North American soil, even while remaining connected to their Ethiopian roots.”
Almost a year and a half later, Sossina M. Haile, an MIT graduate, continues to teach at the California Institute of Technology where she is the Carl F. Braun Professor of Materials Science and of Chemical Engineering.

Mimi Alemayehou was recently named the “top African female executive at the Overseas Private Investment Corporation” by Forbes.

Fanna Haile Selassie continues to work for WSIL where she is extremely successful.
Weyni Mengesha just wrapped up the play she directed, “Lungs”, in Toronto.

Meklit Hadero has recently completed her album “We are Alive!” to great review.

Mehret Mandefro is currently Chief Medical Officer of Amida Tech and on faculty in the Department of Health Policy at George Washington School of Public Health and Health Services.

Alfa Demmellash continues her work with her nonprofit “Rising Tide Capital” that helps entrepreneurs get their footing.

To learn more about these women and what they do, read the original article here.

We are so proud of the many people who continue to celebrate their heritage and use their success as a beacon for others to do the same. As promoters of knowledge, we look forward to learning even more about these wonderful women but also about the many others who may follow.
