In LMU Roski’s Dinning Hall, a lecture entitled, “Creation: Is God’s Charity Broad Enough for Bears,” was given by Dr. Elizabeth Johnson from Fordham University and dedication to Sister Mary Milligan R.S.H.M., who had past away in 2011. She was known for her great leadership role at LMU. The event was a collaborative effort between the Theological Department, University Relations, and the Marymount Institute for Faith, Culture, and the Arts. The entire lecture reflected on spirituality within the Church and the whole world. It also implied that service applies to what is written in the gospel based on the gospel, “that all may have and have it to the full.”
From a theological and ecological standpoint, Dr. Johnson emphasized three major points: (1) exploring the meaning of the doctorate of creation, (2) the world’s relation to God in the Spirit of Christ, and (3) the need for all to be converted to the earth. With specific research sources and critical analysis, Dr. Johnson addressed how humans were given domination over nature (plants and animals) for their use, as it is written in the first book of Genesis. It specifies that nature is a reliable resource to use, depending on people chose to use it. She also compared and contrasted how nature itself relates to God’s world. She implied that the Giver of Life is behind everything that humans know today. Last but not least, she firmly stated the importance of becoming one with the earth. It’s not just about daily routine, but to let our minds and souls reflect on how we were created out of nature by the supernatural divine.
The result of Dr. Johnson’s lecture resulted in applause and a standing ovation. At the end of the lecture, Dr. Theresia de Vroom unveiled a gift. The gift was an original art work by Will Pupa, an Artist in Residence in the Marymount Institute, entitled, “Temporis Filia Veritas”, translated as “Truth is the Daughter of Time,” which was very captivating because art has a voice that speaks to all cultures and various areas of faith.
Later, a reception was held at the Marymount Center where Marymount Institute Press and Tsehai Publishers was selling their latest books, Creation: Is God's Charity Enough for Bears and Resurrection, tied to the lecture series.
